The Crucible (1996)I'm sure everyone reading this is familiar with the hysteria that occurred in or about 1692 so I won't waste time recounting that. Good WIKI article about the trials/victims/etc. This film is based on Arthur Miller's play The Crucible and, in my opinion, is mostly a faithful representation of that. I thought the performances in this film were outstanding, though who would expect less from Daniel Day Lewis, Winona Ryder and Joan Allen? One small gripe/observation, Abigail Williams was an eleven year old child, and I think Winona is about thirty here. Now, we know folks started things much younger back then... why not represent it as so? On second thought, can you see all the churches freaking out? My god, they represented an 11 year old as a 'HARLOT'!! I get tired of Hollywood revising history. Oh well, none of the film is really spoiled by this. It just stuck in my craw a little. To me, the most interesting aspect of the story is man's dogged insistence in externalizing evil, particularly in those days. If someone did something bad, they must have been told to do so by the devil. In this case, 20 people were put to death before people were forced to recognize that in most cases the evil comes from within. 7.5 out of 10.

In the play Abigail is older than 11. She was more like 18.

The movie is based on Arthur Miller's play, so . . . . His play was taken from the actual event and represented actual people, but it's not an accurate rendition of what happened. It's a kick ass play, though.
