Years and years ago Alcatraz was known as the 'White Rock' by the Native Americans because it was covered in pelican droppings. The local tribes would avoid the island because they believed that it was haunted by evil spirits and that it was a portal for another sinister dimension. The first prisoners were sent to 'The Rock' in 1859. The prison was constantly damp, there was no heat, no running water and very little light. Prisoners were mistreated in the worst ways. Diseases were everywhere and most prisoners died from them or they went insane. The prison closed in 1963 and is now a famous tourist attraction with many many haunting stories. You keep coming up with the best topics!
I've been to "the Rock" three times. It's spooky and I don't doubt the haunting stories at all.

It's hard to tell because cold spots are a natural occurrence there. I really doubt I'd spend the night in the main cell block. It's confined and made me very claustrophobic, though solitary confinement is worse.
I didn't see anything or feel anything unexpected but I did experience a bit of sadness while I was there. I think it's just the aura of the place.
