I remember someone telling met this story when I was young. I have always found it interesting. "Mighty Mary was a five ton Asian elephant who performed in the Sparks World Famous Shows circus. Her death is sometimes interpreted as a cautionary tale of circus animal abuse during the early twentieth century." en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mighty_Mary

I found that story heartbreaking! The part where they hung her the first time and the chain broke and she broke her hip was horrible. Poor thing. She was obviously just trying to defend herself from the assistant trainer who prodded her for no reason. I did read this thread before but I have no idea why I didn't post. Who in the world told you this story when you were a child?

That's funny because I was watching horror movies too at that age. Animal cruelty had a more traumatic effect on me than any horror movie back then. I used to bawl at the end of Littlest Hobo.
