While I'm sure that most people are familiar with the shape of the obelisk, I wonder if its signifigance/purpose is as widely known? The obelisk in form stems from the Egyptian culture, at least to our reckoning (could be further back) and was used as a place for people to worship the sun god (RA in that culture).
The Bible has this to say in Leviticus about worshipping stone idols:
Lev 26:1 Ye shall make you no idols nor graven image, neither rear you up a standing image, neither shall ye set up any image of stone in your land, to bow down unto it: for I am the LORD your God.
YET, in St. Peter's Square, the hub of the vatican and the core of the catholic religion, we see not only an obelisk shape, but the obelisk itself is a genuine Egyptian obelisk unearthed and placed there in 1587 by Pope Sixtus V. This particular obelisk is said to have been seen by Moses himself.
By the by, see the 'wheel' shape that the obelisk centers in? That's an ancient pagan symbol as well (I'll go into that later).
So, we have an actual Egyptian obelisk, designed to worship the god of the sun, in the house of the biblical God, the one who explicitly said no worshipping of stone idols and no one bats an eye? Why not? Because people are sheep who forget their history and are too apathetic to educate themselves.

Now, to me, as big a question is why exactly was thing raised in the heart of modern America as a tribute to George Washington? Why did they honor him with a temple to the sun god?
I'm beginning to understand why and I'll lead you through what I've discovered via the symbology of ancient times and their meanings in modern society. It's enough to shake you up from the core, stay tuned.
