Mazes have ancient associations with the underworld and with the souls of the dead. Mazes exist around the world. The oldest maze, in Egypt, is believed to have been built approx. 5,000 years ago. According to myth, the labyrinth was built by 12 kings as a memorial to themselves and as a tomb to scared crocodiles. The Egyptian earth god, Geb assumed the shape of a crocodile and was worshiped by the souls of the dead. In myth and legend, mazes are difficult to get through and full of danger. They are presided over by supernatural beings and creatures some of who help travelers and others that will not. According to myth, The Labyrinth of Crete has no way out and at the center is the mythical beast Mintoaur....half man, half bull who devoured any people who were sent into the maze as a sacrificial victim. Mazes have many different shapes and patterns. One of the most common shape is spiral, a symbol of goddess. Just a note: There are many different websites with different theories on mazes and labyrinths. This is just one.
