I didn't know if I should of put this under haunting, the devil, or what. So here it is. I found this is an old book I have that claims that the Lutz haunting was proven a hoax so who knows how much is actual fact.
Hull House was built in 1886 as the home of Charles J. Hull. In the late 1880's it became the United States first welfare office run by Jane Addams. In 1963 the welfare office was moved and the house was preserved as a museum.
The devil baby rumour began in 1913. There are many different versions of the rumour. In the Italian version, a young woman defied her family when she married an atheist. Soon after she married, she became pregnant. A few months later the woman hung a portrait of the Virgin Mary in the house. Her husband was furious, tore down the painting and ripped it up saying he would rather have the devil in house.
Few months later out pops the Devil Baby. It had horns, hoofs for feet, pointed ears, a tails and a scaled body. It could walk and talk and would run around the house threatening the father.
Finally the father took the baby to Jane Addams at the Hull House. Supposingly Jane tried to have the baby baptized and when that didn't work, she locked it in the attic.
Once the rumour got around hundreds of people wanted to see the demon baby. The staff of the office denied everything. The story refused to die and even today people continue to ask about the demon child and some say that it can still be seen occasionally peeking out from the attic windows. Visitors to the museum also claim that to have photographed unusual lights and ectoplasm inside Hull House.
